Where's the outrage when it comes to cutting back the nation's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

There was national outrage when the government shutdown forced federal workers, contractors, and their families to go to food banks so they wouldn't have to choose between groceries and monthly bills like rent, mortgage, or a utility bill. Rightly so. People who work should get paid.
We saw how devastating working without pay could be and how it trickled down to other businesses, especially main street. After 35 days, the Trump administration saw fit to end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history without getting their 5.7 million for the border wall they wanted. A lot of people suffered as a result.

Now, the Trump administration proposes a rule that would take away the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a critical food assistance subsidy, from 3 million people who are struggling to make ends meet. These individuals include:
  • Lower-income and less-educated workers and their families
  • Disabled adults and children
  • The elderly population
  • Individuals who have recently lost a job
  • And U.S. green card holders
People we see in our communities every day. Yet, we're not seeing the same kind of public outrage, although more people will be affected by this rule. The government shutdown directly impacted 800,000 federal workers. This newly proposed rule would hit almost two times more people - plus their families. Many of these individuals are working and struggling to survive, which is why SNAP support is so critical.

Here's how this proposed rule would impact 3 million Americans and their families:
  • Fuel rates of hunger and food insecurity by taking food off the tables of working families with children, seniors, and people with disabilities, among others.
  • Prevent children from receiving health school meals, putting their health and learning at risk.
  • Create a sicker and poorer nation by denying struggling households the food assistance they need for a healthy, productive life.
  • Harm the economy, grocery retailers, and amount of SNAP dollars available to spur local economic activity.
This shouldn't happen. It doesn't have to happen.

We must speak out against this Draconian and short-sighted policy. I'm asking you to make a public comment against the policy by September 23, 2019
