Friday's Flashback: Aaliyah's "One in a Million"
Yesterday, would have been the singer Aaliyah's (Aaliyah Dana Haughton) 35th birthday. The Brooklyn born artist came on the music scene at 15 and captivated audiences with her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number. The album sold three million copies in the United States and catapulted her to stardom. She wasn't a one-hit wonder and proved to have A-list star power and at the time was one of R&Bs top-tier artists.
I often wonder if Beyonce would have had the success she does if Aaliyah was still around. I'm not hatin' jut wondering how the industry would be different for other female artists like Beyonce and Rihanna. Aaliyah paved the way.
Growing up I liked having a unique name, but most people didn't know how to pronounce it when they saw the two a's. That changed after Aaliyah hit the scene. People looked at my name and would say, "Like the singer," the funny thing is they still do. I've also noticed that Aaliyah is a lot more common among girls name these days than when I was growing up. It has many different spellings, but you know I think the way we spell it is the best, lol.
Aaliyah's life wasn't without controversy. Who can forget her infamous marriage to R. Kelly (pervert)? The marriage was annulled by her parents in 1995 and she weathered that storm. She went on to be a world-wide public figure staring in films and television. Although her life was cut short at the age of 22 when her plane crashed, she is still fondly remembered. There are many fans who miss this cherished entertainer. In memory of Aaliyah, her video One in a Million is this week's flashback. Enjoy the video and remember to live your own life to the fullest!
